F-1 student visa & work options

The F-1 is the standard US student visa. It comes with strong work rights — both during your studies and after graduation through OPT.

F-1 Student Visa Process
  • Receive your I-20 form from your US university after acceptance
  • Pay the SEVIS fee ($350) and complete the DS-160 online form
  • Attend an in-person visa interview at the US Embassy
  • Required documents: I-20, proof of funds, IELTS/TOEFL, financial statements
  • Processing time: 2–8 weeks depending on embassy location
CPT, OPT & Work Rights
  • On-campus work: up to 20 hrs/week while enrolled
  • CPT (Curricular Practical Training): paid internships during your degree
  • OPT post-graduation: 12 months work authorisation, any employer
  • STEM OPT extension: up to 36 months for qualifying STEM graduates
  • Long-term stay via H-1B employer sponsorship after OPT
